A single room, a single fire, a single bowl passed between strangers who leave as something quieter than friends.
HANAMI sits at the edge of Higashiyama, where the maple canopy meets a garden we did not design so much as agree to. Each bowl of matcha is whisked to the sound the room happens to be making — rain, cicada, silence. We have no menu that survives a year. We have only attention, poured hot, twice a day.
Guests sit low, host sits lower. No one in the room is more important than the kettle.
Every utensil is older than the person using it, and will outlive them too. You are a guest of the bowl, not the reverse.
The tea is not the point. The eleven minutes of not-speaking beforehand are the point.
"I came in a stranger to the door and left a stranger through it — but for the eleven minutes between, I was known by a bowl of tea better than I have ever been known by a person."— Guest Book, Higashiyama, 2nd year of Reiwa
Seating is by appointment, four guests at a time, in the order the garden decides. Write to us with a preferred season and we will find you a bowl.
